The first official Father’s Day is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, who lived in Washington state in the early 1900s. Inspired by Mother’s Day, Sonora wanted to honour her father — a single parent who raised six children on his own.
Her idea took hold, and in 1910, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane. Over time, the idea spread across the United States, though it wasn’t officially recognised nationwide until 1972, when President Nixon signed it into law.
The British Take on Father’s Day
The UK began celebrating Father’s Day later, influenced by the American tradition. It gained popularity after the Second World War — a time when family values, gratitude, and the celebration of loved ones took on new meaning.
Unlike Mother’s Day, which has roots in the Christian calendar, Father’s Day in Britain doesn’t have a religious origin. Instead, it’s always celebrated on the third Sunday in June, just like in the U.S. Over the decades, it has become a cherished part of the British calendar — a day for lie-ins, roast dinners, and (if you’re lucky) a handpicked gift that shows just how much Dad means to you.
